Rust College unveils new look for The Sentinel

The new academic year also brought a new magazine for Rust College’s beloved magazine, The Sentinel.

The fall 2014 edition is in the mail and already getting rave reviews from students, alumni and friends of the Holly Springs-based college.

“We want to show Rust College at its best,” says Tommiea Jackson, director of public relations and 1999 alumna. “We were able to bring together the work of an awesome designer, awesome photographer and awesome student writers to help us do just that.”

The magazine includes some fascinating stories. “Diamond jubilee never looked so good” features Mabel Wilson Wesley who graduated from Rust College in 1939, 75 years ago. Smart, funny and healthy, the 97-year-old will attend the college’s Founders’ Week activities Nov. 2-9.

Another story focuses on the new head basketball coach. While Edward Newton may be new to his position as the head basketball coach, he is not new to Rust College. This Rust College alumnus, who last coached at Rust as Lemoyne-Owen’ head coach, is shooting for major wins this season. Newton’s first game is against Lemoyne-Owen, the school’s biggest rival, during Founders’ Week on Nov. 8.

The new look is the beginning of the school’s newest efforts to connect with alumni and supporters of Rust College according to Dr. Ishmell Edwards, vice president for college relations.

“It is very important to us not only that we find new and innovative ways to connect with Rustites worldwide, but we want to make sure they know about the great things happening on campus,” says Edwards, who graduated from Rust in 1971.

The college has also ramped up its social media efforts to reach its young alumni. Connect with Rust College on Facebook at or on
