I lived in Texas for 22 years where Juneteenth was particularly meaningful.  June 19th, 1865 is when slaves in Texas finally learned about President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.  Recent events have caused us all to reflect on the progress of Black Americans in the United States since 1865 and the significant challenges still ahead of us.  Please use this Juneteenth to consider the work that we all must engage in to improve ourselves and our nation.  I am proud of the contributions of Rust College since 1866 in preparing Black Americans for service and participation in American society.  Today we must recommit ourselves to our efforts at Rust College to be part of the solution to modern challenges while we honor the history of our ancestors.
