Rust College Tops Tougaloo College In Rare Non-Conference Clash
TOUGALOO, MS – The Rust College men’s basketball program overcame an eight-point halftime deficit on the strength of a hot shooting night by Elijah Pughsley to storm back and win 75-69.
The Bearcats (5-7, 1-3 GCAC) made over 50-percent of its shots for the second consecutive contest and third time this season, burying 30-of-53 (56.6%) attempts including a 15-of-24 (62.5%) clip in the second half.
Pughsley was the clear choice for player of the game, putting the blue and gray on his shoulders and carrying them to victory. He became the first Bearcat to log five steals in a game this year, set season-highs for points (23), field goals (7) and three-pointers plus picked up his first career block.
The 6-foot-1 senior from Lima, Ohio was the game’s leading scorer and stealer while topping the team in assists with three.
Christopher Agbo has made his presence felt off the bench of late, pulling down ten-plus boards as a reserve for the second time in his past three appearances while posting his fourth double-figure rebounding total of the campaign.
DeAvion Washington was one of three Bearcats to score in double-digits, finishing the night with 12 points, a tied for season-best two steals and a game-high two blocks.
Jordan Watkins was the third and final player to cross the ten-point threshold for Coach Newton, dropping 15 on a tied for season-best six made field goals.
Tougaloo (1-5, 0-4 GCAC) won the turnover battle by seven while seeing both Karl Johnson (16) and Antwan Beans (11) score double-digits.
Harrison Carr topped the Bulldogs with six rebounds and three steals, Dallas Craven led both teams with four assists and both Deonte’ Spencer plus Datavian Porter had a rejection.
